There is something extraordinarily democratic about water. The sea does not ask who you are, where you come from, or how you are made. The waves come for everyone. The wind blows for everyone. And the board — that simple, wonderful SUP board — can show anyone something incredible: that they can stand up, find their balance, float above the water. That they can feel, perhaps for the very first time, capable.
It is with this spirit — deeply believing that sport is a universal right — that "SUP & Cognitive Disability, sport for everyone" is born. A project that fills us with pride and emotion, and one we want to share with our entire community.
April 2nd, World Autism Awareness Day, is not just a date on the calendar. It is a moment to stop, look, and listen. This year, Blue Tribe chose to act: presenting a concrete initiative, built with care, designed to last.
A.S.D. Blue Tribe, in collaboration with ASI Calabria and A.P.S. Insieme per la città, is launching a new programme dedicated to young people with cognitive disabilities from the age of 8. A project that brings together sport, the sea and inclusion in an embrace that leaves no one behind.
Because sport is not just competition, rankings and stopwatches. Sport is balance — physical and inner. It is the moment when the body learns to trust itself. And that is exactly what we want to give these young people: trust. Autonomy. Joy.
Every detail of this project has been designed with precision and sensitivity. The programme is coordinated by Dr. Daniela Gullace, behaviour analyst, who works in close synergy with qualified SUP instructors. Not an improvised approach, but an integrated model where sporting skills and behavioural support meet, communicate, and complement each other.
The methodology is based on brief explanations, simple language and visual tools. Because every young person has their own rhythm. And we are here to respect it, accompany it, and celebrate it.
The programme is structured in 5 progressive phases, designed to bring every participant — at their own pace, in complete safety — from observation to open water:
1. Initial behavioural assessment — to get to know each young person, understand their needs and build a personalised path.
2. Live observation — to become familiar with the environment, the instructors and the equipment, without pressure and without rushing.
3. Balance board exercises on land — a first contact with the feeling of the board, in a safe and controlled environment.
4. Progressive approach to water — first in a swimming pool, then in the sea. One step at a time, always with support.
5. Final debriefing with feedback — to gather emotions, observations, and to celebrate every small but great achievement.
Activities take place in small groups of 3–4 young people, with the possibility for parents to participate and provide support. Because inclusion begins with the family.
The programme includes 5 weekly sessions: 2 in a swimming pool and 3 in the sea, at the wonderful location of the Strait of Messina. A magical place where the water is clear, the wind is gentle, and the landscape speaks for itself — a vision of freedom.
To kick everything off, an Open Day with a free trial session in the pool: a first moment of meeting and mutual discovery between young people, families, instructors and the project itself. A way to enter the water — literally and metaphorically — without fear.
Blue Tribe does not stop at the waterside. The project also includes presentation meetings at local associations, schools and community organisations, with visual materials, process videos, hands-on balance board and SUP demonstrations, and content designed to communicate the aims and benefits of the initiative.
Because inclusive sport is not just an activity. It is a culture. It is a way of seeing the world. And it is a message we want to carry wherever we can reach.
With this project, Blue Tribe strengthens its mission: promoting sport as a tool for inclusion, personal growth, and the enrichment of the local community. A model that places the person before performance.
We firmly believe that SUP, kitesurf, wingfoil — the sea in all its forms — have the power to transform people. To give courage to those who are afraid. To give voice to those who struggle to find it. To give a place in the world to those who sometimes feel out of place.
This is Blue Tribe. This is our tribe. And in this tribe, there is room for everyone.
